SUN ROOM (2-3’s)



Staffing ratios of 1:5 are adhered to which is in accordance with Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Guidance. Four months before a child turns two, they begin transitioning into the Sun Room by being introduced to new equipment which they will use in the new room. The routine in the Sun Room is slightly more structured than the Star room as we recognise the importance of children understanding what comes next as it helps them feel secure so they are able to learn with confidence. In the Sun Room, we have a quiet area which is used for children who still have a sleep and a separate toilet area with child sized sinks and toilets to promote and support independent hygiene. In the Sun Room there is a major focus on speech and language and practitioners introduce new vocabulary throughout the day to support this.

The Sun Room children explore the back garden and also have access to the front garden at different times. The garden is a large space which caters to lots of different interests and allows children to move freely as they express themselves. Children are able to use gross motor skills which in turn support the development of their fine motor skills.

Activities in the Sun Room may include:

Play Trays – encouraging children/s natural curiosity investigating a variety of objects in different ways
Messy play – sand, gloop, water, play dough, paint, chalk
Books and songs
Exploring the outside world – exploring the bug hotel, mud kitchen play
Opportunities to explore and interact with older children
Physical play – races, balancing, dancing, bikes and scooters
Fine motor activities – threading, building blocks
Role play and dressing up
